WHAT IS DIABETIC

EYE?

Diabetes is a systemic disease that occurs when one's blood sugar is abnormally elevated due to insulin resistance or loss. Tissue damages from high blood sugar can involve the eye by damaging blood vessels that are inside the retina. And the longer a person has diabetes, the greater the chance of developing diabetic retinopathy.

Some of the harmful changes within the diabetic eye include leaky fluid or fat into the retina, which is the lining inside the back of the eyes. When the retinal damage is severe, with retinal nerve cells swelling, abnormal new blood vessels growth or bleeds, or scarring, eye sight is endangered.
